ISLAND DREAMS

Perfect for zoning an open-plan kitchen diner, providing extra prep space or serving up drinks when you’ve got friends over, a kitchen island is the focal point of any kitchen. So whether you’re looking for a statement design or a small-space solution, scroll down for some practical design ideas…

WHAT IS THE MAIN FUNCTION OF THE ISLAND?

This is probably the most important thing to consider; everything from material to size will follow according to the island’s designated function. Food prep and cooking will require more space and access to plumbing, venting, and electrical systems, for example. An island with a play area, on the other hand, will require child-safe materials and possibly lower counter heights.

The island’s main function can depend largely on the overall flow of activity in the kitchen, both working and living. If the cooking area is too cramped, consider moving the hob to the island. If you have kids running around, you may want to make one end a dedicated play area. Note that both options may require the island to be bigger, however.

OPT FOR DUAL WORKTOPS

Opting for split surfaces is a simple but incredibly effective way of adding interest to your kitchen island. Here, the breakfast bar is made from solid wood, which is kind on elbows and crockery, while the hardworking prep side is a more durable composite quartz surface.

FLOATING ISLAND

What is a floating kitchen island?

The phrase “floating kitchen island” describes several different types of islands. Floating kitchen islands appear to float because the pedestal holding it up is significantly setback from your eyesight. Often, the floating kitchen islands have downlights that emphasize the open space beneath the kitchen cabinets.

BANQUETTE STYLE KITCHEN ISLAND

Banquette seating offers the cosy intimacy of your favourite diner, at home. It’s also a great space-saving solution on a kitchen island unit, as fitted seating requires less floor space than freestanding.  It’s also a great way of incorporating extra storage by using lift up seating.

ISLANDS FOR SMALL KITCHENS

Typically, islands are rectangular, which offers the greatest amount of worktop and storage space in the centre of a large kitchen. However, square kitchen islands can be the ideal solution for a practical small kitchen. If you are after a small kitchen island with seating, all you really need is a small overhang and a couple of simple wooden stools to create the perfect resting point for your morning coffee.
